Malaysian Cosplayer SallyDorasnow has put together a number of fantastic Cosplays over the past four years, with her first Cosplay of Rory Mercury from Gate JieTai being one of her favorites and best ones so far. She has a hard time, however, choosing which one of her cosplays is her favorite, but would probably go with her “Boosette” Cosplay based on the Mario fan art. Like many others, Dorasnow has made it a point to move beyond traditional Cosplay and moved into cosplaying fan-art cosplays as well.
1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Hey everyone ❤ I am Sally-Dorasnow, a full-time content creator and cosplayer from Malaysia. My hometown is the City of Kuantan in the State of Pahang. I have a love for animals and enjoy chocolate (who doesn’t) XD I’ve also been doing some game streaming on Twitch and YouTube. Maybe I can say hello to you during my live streams! I am shy but happy to make friends, please say hi if you see me ❤.
2. What made you start cosplaying? And how long have you been into it?
I wanted to try it out since middle school but cosplay is quite costly and I don’t know where to get information about cosplay events during that time so that passion slowly dims down with time. I guess my turning point is after I went to KDU University College where I joined the anime club — Animspiration. They encouraged me to try out Cosplay again. I did and I have loved it ever since. I debuted my first Cosplay at Animangaki in 2016 as Rory Mercury from Gate Jietai.
With my first Cosplay, I also made my first prop weapon. I don’t have pictures except those from my Instagram that I show here. This was my first prop many years ago so please don’t judge me too harshly. My skills have improved a little bit since that time:
It is very rough, I have zero experience. I use wood instead of PVC pipe, so it was very heavy to carry around. The prop itself only survived for one day during the event before the snake and other accessories came off. After that event, I commission a prop maker to help retouch and repair the prop.
Above is one of the earliest Cosplays from quite a few years back then. My Third attempt at cosplaying as Rory Mercury looks better but still has a lot of room for improvement! My First Cosplay at Animangaki is really not a good state to see. I didn’t even know how to wear or care for a wig properly back then. Of course, now I’ve learned how to do that and work better with makeup and other accessories.
3. What’s your favorite cosplay that you have done already?
It will be Boosette, a Fan art made from Mario. For sure this is my favorite. I love her so much! I have a thing for all things cute and Loli. She’s cute, she shy and she’s a little loli ghost It is one of the most adorable fan art creations I’ve seen in a long time, so I decided to Cosplay Boosette.
4. What cosplays are you planning on doing (or redoing) in the future?
My first cosplay is Rory Mercury from JDSF and maybe try crossplay as a male character too, as I have a favorite cross-gender character! My favorite is Jack Frost from “Rise of the Guardians” and Todoroki from the anime “My Hero Academia.” I really want to try to crossplay because I see it as an interesting Cosplay challenge of taking on a male character. I’m still learning a lot about this and will hopefully be able to put one together soon!
5. What was the most difficult cosplay you’ve done? What made it difficult?
Boo because the amount of supporting details needed to cosplay that character really takes up my stamina! It’s embarrassing to say but wearing an F/G Cup Fake Boobs is super tiring and sweaty to look perfect for the character I am doing. But when the Cosplay comes out looking perfect and the photos are also great, then I know it is totally worth it.
6. Do you prefer to do solo cosplays or cosplays with other people and why?
To be honest both have their perks. I enjoy cosplaying alone but if that character needs a partner to perfect the cosplay, it will be amazing to have a partner to go with it. Group cosplay partners have their perks too. It is a challenging thing to get a group that has the same interest and agrees to cosplay on the same anime series.
7. Are there any other cosplayers that you really admire?
Many I have on my mind I admire a lot but these cosplayer’s Cosplays are more like works of art. I find that their work really motivates and inspires me to do lots of beautiful Cosplays and maybe other works of my own. But the few cosplayer’s that I really admire and follow are: -
· Xiao Rou from China
· Ying Tze from Malaysia
· Rocksy from Russia
· Sakana from Taiwan
· Misa from Taiwan
8. Have you learned more about yourself since you started cosplaying? If you have, what did you learn?
Yes, I changed to a different person compared to the past, I used to be very shy and timed but I slowly started to gain more confidence in both my body and my mind. I’m stronger now mentally than I used to be. Cosplay has helped with that. I put on a Cosplay and I learn to do things more boldly and ignore haters since we can’t satisfy everyone. It taught me to just be happy and don’t regret doing something you are passionate about, or just want to try. Do it, and then when looking at the past in the future, you will have no regrets.
9. What makes you choose to cosplay a certain character?
Love and inspiration for that character. Just like any other artist, you must feel passion first! The reason why I chose Rory Mercury as my first character… I cannot really explain, she sparked something in me. A passion. Joy maybe? I’m not sure but I felt a connection to the character which is why I did my first Cosplay was that character!
10. What games have you been streaming lately? Why those games?
Overwatch! I love that game because I get to play with my friends too and it’s great when we play together and win. We lose a lot too but it’s ok because it is good practice helps me improve my gaming skills — especially my aim. The game also makes my brain juice flow with all the strategies and tactics!
11. When did you start streaming and why?
I first started game streaming just for fun. It was a great way to interact with people, have fun and meet people that I could play with. People are generally nice and polite. So I am too.
12. What is your earliest memory of gaming?
I remember Pokemon Emerald, Resident Evil on the PlayStation 1, and Donkey Kong as my earliest gaming memory. It was my dad who brought me in to the world of Games. I think he did it so we could spend time together, doing something fun.
13. What is your favorite memory or achievement while streaming so far?
I won’t say I have a favorite but I love having fun with my audience especially with my gaming friends as a team. We make silly mistakes, funny moments, pranking, and such.
14. So, if you were going to be streaming today, walk us through what the day would be like?
I normally stream in the evenings from about 09:00 pm, on Twitch or sometimes, but rarely on YouTube. So most of the time, I start preparations and setup after I’ve had dinner with my family. Nothing really fancy or special: Just check the hardware; make sure I can connect to the game and then stream! I normally stream for a few hours only because it gets kind of tiring and I need private time to help me recharge.
15. How do you mix work/life balance and streaming?
Badly! I am hopeless at planning things so I don’t plan things more than a few days in advance. That way I can just prioritize what needs to be done on the days I am streaming, to make sure that I can get everything done and stream on time!
16. What equipment do you use? Shout out to your sponsors?
I don’t really have any sponsored equipment right now; mostly because streaming is something I do for fun and for leisure, but I am definitely open to sponsors if anyone is interested, please contact me via my Facebook or Twitter! For the moment, I use a Lenovo Gaming Laptop Rode Mic and a Corsair gaming mouse. It’s been so long since I’ve upgraded my hardware I don’t remember anything more detailed!
17. Anybody that you watch and/or follow on Twitch or YouTube?
I do follow and subscribe to a few channels on YouTube. One of my favorites is definitely Isis Vasconcellos who is an amazing singer. I just love her music and I like listening to it in my free time or when I’m at work. Other channels that I subscribe to and follow pretty regularly are
· Raon Lee
· Harutya
18. Where can we find you on Twitch, YouTube, Twitter? What time do you stream?
I stream as a hobby during my leisure time, and to have fun with friends and interact with my fans as well. I do post up announcements on my social media when I’m planning to stream, so subscribe to that and you’ll be able to talk to me and maybe join me in Overwatch some time!
19. If anyone would like to see more of your Cosplays or get in touch with you for events and/or sponsorship, how can they reach you?
You can always find me through my Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter and if you want to watch my streams, you can check out my YouTube and Twitch. If you would like to provide more support for what I do, you can always become my patron on Patreon!
Whether she’s streaming or working on her next Cosplay, you can check out her socials above to find out what she’s working on next! Thanks to Sally Dorasnow for the interview!
